SUMMER EXCITEMENT

Flint School of Performing Arts Summer Programs are the perfect way to open up a whole new world of music and dance for beginners, or provide a fun, yet challenging environment for students who already have experience.

Classes take place right in the heart of the Flint Cultural Center with a professional staff of performers/instructors. Become a part of the great things happening at Michigan’s largest performing arts school. Schedule as of March 1, 2008. Dates and prices subject to change.

No suitcase needed but bring an extra set of clothes. This fun and educational day camp is filled with multicultural music and dance, visual art and stories. Make new friends and bring your friends with you. CHILDREN MUST BE POTTY TRAINED AND WILLING TO BE INDEPENDENT FROM PARENT.

Using creative movement, you’ll explore a variety of dance styles, including ballet, jazz, ethnic and mime in this great day camp experience.

SUMMER FUN WITH PIANO

Learn to play the piano, and then some!

With this fun and stimulating day camp, you’ll learn the fundamentals of playing the piano and explore note reading and playing by ear. Begin to develop your musical vocabulary and appreciation of music through a variety of fun activities, including listening, singing, chanting, moving, playing instruments and reading music.

You'll aslo get a chance to experience the FSPA's state-of-the-art music technology lab, as well as explore the Flint Cultural Center campus. Enrollment is limited, so sign up early! Fee includes a camp t-shirt and daily snack.

Join us for this two-week-long day camp and experience the fun and excitement of learning to play the violin, viola, cello or bass! Beginners will choose their favorite instrument and learn to play it. Intermediates will work together as a group on fun and educational music. You’ll enjoy recreational activities, too!

You'll also get a chance to experience the FSPA's state-of-the-art music techonology lab and explore the Flint Culteral Center campus. Fee includes a camp t-shirt and a morning snack. Instruments provided for beginners. Don't miss the skills demonstration Friday July 18 at 11:00 am.

PERCUSSION CAMP

Feel the beat!

Interested in playing percussion instruments? Sign up for this class today and learn about a variety of percussion instruments and so much more!

Try your hand at tom-toms, bongos, hand drums, timpani, marimba, xylophone, shakers, tambourine, triangle, maracas and a whole host of other percussion instruments—and learn the proper playing techniques for all of them! You’ll also be introduced to musical basics like rhythm and music reading.

Bring your enthusiasm and curiosity...we'll supply the rest. A snack will be provided each day. Fee includes a camp t-shirt. There will be a skills demonstration Friday, June 27 at 11:30am in the MacArthur Recital Hall.

CREATE A MUSICAL

Do you like to sing, play an instrument, act, write and/or dance? Bring the skills you have and learn new ones. At this camp you will join with other students to become a "production company" and learn how to write a script and song lyrics, compose melodies, and choreograph dances. Produce a completely student-generated show that will be presented at the end of the camp!

A snack will be provided each day. Fee includes a camp t-shirt.

Already play the trumpet? Don't go back to band or your first lesson unprepared and out of shape! We'll jump start your fall season with a great warm-up routine, a review of all the basic trumpet techniques, a little music theory, and some terrific trumpet ensemble music.

Have you always wanted to play the flute? This program is perfect for those students considering playing flute in band. Dust off your flute case and go back to school ready for band! Ready, Set, Flute! is a three-day camp that’s just in time to give students a head start on the new year. During daily two-hour sessions, you will get refreshers on the basics, learn many new songs and participate in the flute choir. You will also have the chance to try out other exciting members of the flute family: piccolo, alto flute and even the bass flute!

If you've ever dreamed of being in a musical, here's your chance! Sing, dance and act out scenes from great Broadway hits like My Fair Lady and others. You won't want to miss this dynamic and exciting four week class that culminates with performances in the MacArthur Recital Hall on July 11 and Kearsley Park Pavilion on July 12.

Each evening's activities include voice class, acting lessons, movement classes and music rehersal for pianists interested in learning the art of accompanying. Fee includes t-shirt. Please indicate in the "Special Notes" section whether you are interested in voice, dance, acting and/or piano.

HIP HOP

If your dance tastes are a bit more pop culture, Hip Hop class is the place to be. Learn the latest moves and dance to your favorite music in this fun and energetic class. The classes are multi-generational and cross over every training level from beginners to advanced.

BALLROOM DANCE

Dancing for Enjoyment

This class is for anyone who always wanted to dance at the club, wedding, reception, party or social function. When you go on that special cruise, do you just sit and watch? This class isn't for the mainstream ballroom enthusiast, but for someone who just wants enough confidence to get out on the floor. These classes are a great form of exercise and a wonderful way to socialize.

Intermediate Ballroom/Latin

Have you been taking classes and feel you're ready to move to the next level? This class is for you! We'll concentrate on new figures and combinations. The material covered in class is chosen to give your dancing that envied flare. If you're bored with the same old moves, come try something new.

SUMMER BALLET INTENSIVE

Ages 10-adult
July 7 - August 1 (4 Weeks)

This program provides a concentrated class schedule, giving experienced students an opportunity to focus on strengthening their ballet technique. An emphasis is placed on pointe work for intermediate and advanced students.

If you have previously attended another dance school, please contact FSPA Dance Division Chair Karen Mills Jennings at 810.0238.1350 ext 137 for placement.

* The first day of Intensive A and B will include a placement class.
**The performance by the Repertory class will be Friday, August 1 at 7:00pm in Studio A.
  Students must register for the ballet class to qualify for the Repertory.
***Students enrolled in the Variations Classes & Emerging Choreographer's Workshop will perform Friday, August 1 at 4:00pm in Studio A. Ladies attending the Pointe/Variations/Partnering class must take the proceeding ballet technique class.
